Gotham FC got a go-ahead goal from Jaedyn Shaw in the 66th minute and seemed like it was going to win with what was the club's one and only shot on target of its match with Angel City FC.
The home team at Sports Illustrated Stadium seemed to once again be heading for another 1-0 win, what would have been their eighth one of those this season, a season which has also seen Gotham concede the fewest goals in the league.
Another 1-0 would have been a result that sent Gotham six points clear at the top of the NWSL standings with a mere three matches left to play. Instead, visiting Angel City FC wiped away some costly early-match misses and scored a dramatic equalizer in the 91st minute through Taylor Suarez to settle this as a 1-1 draw.
It's two points dropped in Gotham's chase for a first-ever NWSL Shield, and it's a slightly sour note on which the club heads into a two-week international break. The second draw of the season with Angel City was still enough for Gotham to clinch a guaranteed home playoff match, not long after Gotham became the first NWSL team to officially clinch a spot in the 2026 playoffs, early steps in the club's effort to repeat as NWSL Champions.
The home playoff match is significant because Gotham had to win two road games in a row on the way to the neutral-site NWSL Championship match a season ago. Home-field advantage is significant, too, because the draw with Angel City extended Gotham's home unbeaten streak to 12 matches. Denver Summit FC is the only team to thus far beat Gotham at home in 2026, as the Bats' home record of 8W-5D-1L is second-best in NWSL behind only the unbeaten (10W-4D-0L) Kansas City Current.
This Gotham team's dominance while playing on its home field makes the stoppage-time equalizer from Angel City sting that much more, though Angel City did put five shots on target and missed a few great and clear-cut chances in the early stages of this match, so their tying goal didn't come entirely out of nowhere.
While a disappointing result for the hosts, it's still one more point added to the season's total, as Gotham goes into the two-week international break with 55 points, four points clear of San Diego Wave FC in second place, but with the biggest match of Gotham's season (so far) to come on the other side of this international break, a trip to Audi Field to play third-place Washington Spirit in what is always a tightly-contested rivalry match among two of the NWSL's top teams.
Gotham: 1.95 xG, 10 shots, 1 shot on target, 63% possession, 485 passes, 82% pass accuracy, 8 fouls, 8 corners, 3 saves

A half of missed chances
No one scored in the opening 45 minutes but both teams had their share of great opportunities that went wanting.
Ann-Katrin Berger had to aggressively race off her goal line to snuff out an Angel City chance at the top of Gotham's 18-yard box in the very early going, denying the visitors a possible opener in the eighth minute.
Jaedyn Shaw, fresh off not being included in the latest United States women's national team roster for two friendlies with Spain, nearly scored straight from a corner kick in the 20th minute, but had her whipped-in try for an olimpico hit the outside of the post.
The 31st minute brought the game's first truly great chance, as Angel City gave the ball away cheaply deep in their own half of the field. Denise O'Sullivan, making a third consecutive start in the Gotham midfield, collected possession, charged forward, and slipped a pass to an unmarked Sam Kerr a few yards to the left of the penalty spot, with only the Angel City keeper to beat. Uncharacteristically, Kerr put her shot wide of the target, letting Angel City off the hook.
A little over five minutes later, Angel City returned the favor when their striker, Prisca Chilufya, tried to capitalize on a loose bit of possession play from Gotham in its own half. Chilufya turned Rose Lavelle over and sprung into an immediate counter, playing a neat one-two with strike partner Sveindís Jónsdóttir to get fully behind the Gotham defense, but Chilufya's 37th-minute shot attempt was wide of Ann-Katrin Berger and the Gotham goal. Berger did charge out to cut down the shooting angle available to Chilufya, but it was still a glaring miss for Angel City, and the last big chance of the first half.
Shaw hits double digits
Gotham's attack was missing Jordynn Dudley for this Angel City match, as the 21-year-old winger suffered a foot injury in training earlier this week and was forced out of this game, and out of the United States U-23 team's camp to be held during the international break.
The lineup needed a tweak without Dudley, and that involved Midge Purce pushing up the field and leaving right-back behind while playing more as a true right midfielder. Mandy Freeman was the new addition in defense in place of Purce, and Purce's new advanced role paid dividends 20 minutes into the second half.
Purce slipped a great pass into the Angel City box and into Rose Lavelle's path, and Lavelle picked out a trailing run from Jaedyn Shaw, who was unmarked in front of ACFC's goal, and who hit a perfect first-time shot with power, off goalkeeper Angelina Anderson, and in to give Gotham a lead.

Lavelle, who is on the USWNT roster for the Spain friendlies, made it a third consecutive match in which she picked up exactly one assist, and it was another goal for Shaw in what is a red-hot stretch of form for the 21-year-old attacker. She now has five goals and one assist in her last six matches, and this one had to be extra satisfying to score, given that Shaw scored it with USWNT coach Emma Hayes in attendance, a few days after Hayes decided to send Shaw to US U-23 camp rather than have her with the senior United States squad as they play the defending World Cup champions Spain twice during the international break.

Shaw's goal was the first shot on target of the match for Gotham, and at that late point in the 66th minute. It wasn't the most clinical of attacking performances from Gotham, as they attempted nine other shots but put none of those on target, but Shaw continued to do her part in what has been a breakout season that now has her with 10 goals scored and five assists provided.
Denied in stoppage time
Angel City came to Harrison, New Jersey unbeaten across its last six matches, and with one of the best road records in NWSL. After Shaw scored, and as Gotham maintained control of possession and of the shot attempts and the general flow of the match in the second half, it seemed like Angel City was heading for a rare defeat amid a strong run.
Taylor Suarez changed that narrative, as the 83rd-minute substitute for Angel City popped up in space in the first of five minutes of second-half stoppage time and beat Ann-Katrin Berger at her near post, rescuing a huge point in Angel City's race for a spot in the NWSL playoffs.

Gotham had seemed to clean up defensively after a few shaky moments in the first half, but they switched off at the back at a most inopportune time and got punished by Angel City and Suarez. This was a second consecutive Angel City-Gotham game to feature a late-match twist, going back to when Angelina Anderson made a save on what could have been a match-winning penalty kick for Gotham's Guro Reiten in the 87th minute of what ended a 0-0 draw in Los Angeles in late August.
If the final three matches of this regular season don't go Gotham's way, they can point to four total points now dropped against Angel City this season as results that held them back.
The late concession hurts, but Gotham now has two weeks to prepare for a tough final run-in that goes: At Washington Spirit, at Orlando Pride, then home against Utah Royals, before Gotham gets to host in the NWSL playoffs once those kick off.
The roster stays in a slight state of flux, given the uncertainty around Jordynn Dudley's injury, the halftime announcement that Gotham had signed former Chicago Stars defender Leila Ouahabi, and the fact that 10 members of the roster will be away with their national teams during the international break. Gotham doesn't head into the break with the best-possible result in hand, but they do have another valuable point as they get ever so closer to a first NWSL Shield in club history.
