Gotham FC wins The Queens Classic in record-breaking night for women's sports in New York

The sold-out crowd of 42,175 at Citi Field made Gotham's 1-0 win over Washington Spirit the most-attended women's sports event in New York City history, and the second-best-attended NWSL match in league history.

They promised us a show and they most certainly delivered.

Under a smoke-filled sky on a hot summer night at Citi Field, Gotham FC defeated the Washington Spirit 1-0 thanks to a Rose Lavelle chip in the first half.

The sold-out crowd of 42,175 fans was the largest ever at a New York women's sports event, breaking a record set when Coco Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka at the 2023 US Open women's singles final. It was also the second-largest crowd ever at an NWSL game behind the 63,004 fans that came out to support Denver Summit FC in their inaugural home match in March.

"More often in the last few weeks than I have maybe in the last few years, I see random people walking around with Gotham T-shirts," said Jessica Berman, commissioner of the NWSL. "We have Gotham fans around New York, and so it takes time to build connectivity with the city. This ownership group is incredibly committed, is willing to make the investment, and we're seeing the benefits of that in real time."

The road to Citi Field

According to Berman, Carolyn Tisch Blodgett and the team at Gotham was responsible for the idea of holding a match at Citi Field. Due to the United States co-hosting the men's World Cup this summer, venue and stadium access has been limited for NWSL teams.

As a result, the NWSL held a month-long break during the group-stage matches before returning to league play at the beginning of July. With the last few matches of the World Cup still being played and broadcasting conflicts with the ESPY Awards needing to be sorted, teams like Gotham worked together with the NWSL, ESPN, and the union to turn an unconventional venue into a proper pitch.

"Even though there were situations where our teams were displaced, like Gotham, we made lemonade out of lemons," Berman said. "Tonight is a really good example of that. The reason tonight happened is because we were forced to be innovative and creative."

Gotham fans eagerly responded to the club's decision to play at Citi Field, if the sold-out crowd was any indication. The support for the Bats in Queens comes a month after confirmation that the club will be making a permanent move to the newly-built Etihad Park in 2028, a stone throw's away from Citi Field. Last night's crowd could be a potential indication of what we might expect to see from the fans in a little over a year and a half.

"My favorite thing about tonight is that it isn't transactional," Berman said. "It's not a one and done. This is the beginning of a new relationship for this team in Queens, and we know that there's an entire fan base here that is going to be really hungry to enjoy the best soccer in the world."

Gotham's perfect night

Things went as well as Gotham could have hoped for in this their first time playing in Queens.

The Bats were hungry for a win, opening up their first five minute on the pitch with relentless pressing against a tentative-looking Washington side. Two shots on goal taken by Gotham within the first five minutes set the tone for the match as Gotham and the Spirit went band for band in a race to see who would score first.

Ultimately, Gotham drew first blood after their press forced Washington in a costly turnover deep in their own defensive end. That set Lavelle up for her match-deciding finish, as she nutmegged a Spirit defender then chipped a shot over goalkeeper Sandy MacIver from an angle only Lavelle could make work. That finish by Lavelle was enough for the Bats to take home the win.

"Any time you hear you're going to get to play in front of 42,000 fans, it's always really exciting," Lavelle said. "We feed off the fans’ energy, so knowing that this was going to be a really exciting home game, but also a big moment in history for this club and for the city, added just another special element going out there."

If Lavelle's goal wasn't enough to hype up the crowd, Sam Kerr's appearance off the bench was. The 2017 NWSL MVP made her return as a Bat to the cheers of over 40,000 fans as she subbed on in the 63rd minute.

"It was a big change from when I was last here, so it was nice to see the growth of the game," Kerr said. "This is what women's football deserves. It should become the norm."

Kerr was quick to find her footing in the match, forcing MacIver into a save with a shot on target very early into her time on the pitch. The Australian admitted that her impact on the game was "hectic," as she felt good in her first five minutes before feeling a drop in her level. Regardless, Kerr is looking forward to the next game coming up this Saturday against the Seattle Reign.

"It's still as crazy as it was back then," Kerr said. "It's still go, go, go. That's probably the biggest thing I learned. It's still the same."

The Spirit kept chasing an equalizer as the match drew close to full time, outshooting Gotham and turning up the pressure late in an attempt to try and level the game. Their attempts were pushed aside through the sheer determination of Gotham's backline and the brick wall that was Ann-Katrin Berger, who made nine saves while earning her ninth clean sheet of this NWSL season.

The Bats now have earned back-to-back wins and shutouts and have pulled within one point of top-of-the-table San Diego Wave, in fourth place but right there in the Shield race. Gotham will look to extend its winning streak to three when they travel to Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island to take on Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, July 18 at 12:00 pm ET.
