Gotham FC made it ten straight unbeaten as they played to a 1-1 draw with Portland Thorns FC on Pride Night at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Friday, a second draw of the season with a Portland side trying to chase down Gotham for the NWSL Shield lead.
Jaedyn Shaw scored a stunning goal to put Gotham ahead in the 60th minute, pulling off an absurd chip from distance to catch Portland goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold off her line.
Gotham could not see out what would have been an eighth 1-0 win of the season, as a VAR intervention led to a Portland penalty in the 70th minute after Jaelin Howell was seen to have clipped Pietra Tordin's heel, a foul that initially went unpunished by referee Joshua Encarnacíon.
Sophia Wilson converted from the spot and made it two stars of the United States women's national team on the scoresheet in Harrison. That would be the extent of the scoring as the final 20 minutes saw Portland come closest to finding a winner, especially during the eight minutes of stoppage time, but Gotham did what it needed to defensively in front of goal to walk away with a draw.
That draw helps Gotham hold serve at the top of the NWSL Shield standings. GFC is now six points clear of second-place San Diego Wave FC, though while the Wave heats up with back-to-back wins following a wild 3-2 victory of their own on Friday night.
San Diego remains the last team to defeat Gotham way back on July 4 in southern California, and the lengthy unbeaten run is why Gotham entered this home match with the Thorns a heavy favorite to hold onto first place in the table and capture the club's first-ever NWSL Shield. It gets a bit harder to start the month of September, as this home game is followed by three straight played on the road.

From attempted cross to banger
The first half didn't include any big chances to score for either side, though Portland had more clear-cut opportunities to put shots on target. Ann-Katrin Berger, who kept her 10th clean sheet of the season last time out when Gotham drew Angel City FC 0-0 in Los Angeles, had to make four saves before halftime, emphatically parrying away a Sophia Wilson shot from an acute angle in the 15th minute.
Gotham didn't look like scoring at any point before halftime, dominating possession at a 70%-of-the-ball clip all night long, but unable to string passes together in the final third. All it took was one spectacular, unintentional moment from Jaedyn Shaw to change that and once again put Gotham in the driver's seat.

"I don't think it's a secret. Based off of my reaction to the goal, I was trying to cross it. I'm really happy it went in...," Shaw said after the match about that finish. Sam Kerr was making a run and seemed to be Shaw's intended target, but her delivery was so good it just floated into the back of the net, right over the head of Arnold after she wandered far from her line.
It was Shaw's sixth goal of the season and the most outrageous of the bunch, and came at a time of need. The other Gotham/USWNT attacker known for pulling off hard-to-believe finishes, Rose Lavelle, was out for this clash with the Thorns as she remains in the concussion protocol after going off early in the draw with Angel City.
Guro Reiten pushed up from left-back and lined up on the left side of Gotham's attack, with Shaw at the No 10 spot in the middle while Lavelle was sidelined. Reiten and Jordynn Dudley each had their moments creating chances from the wide areas, with Dudley credited with four chances created and Reiten three, but none of Gotham's combination play got them a goal.
Instead it fell to Shaw to pull something out of nothing. The goal brought her up to 10 goal contributions (four assists with the six goals) this season, and six goals has her tied with the controversially-departed Esther González for the team lead. Shaw has been the most consistent Gotham contributor over the full course of the season and this moment will likely stand out as a big one to remember.
Leaving level
After going ahead, Gotham tried to see out yet another clean sheet, but Portland would create multiple dangerous moments in Gotham's 18-yard box after going behind. The scramble at the top of the box that occurred in the 70th minute included the foul, uncalled at first, committed by Jaelin Howell that would send Wilson to the spot and let Portland get level.
Wilson sent Berger the wrong way on the penalty and made no mistake with her finish, her 11th goal this season. The two-time NWSL MVP looked like a threat every time she got on the ball at Sports Illustrated Stadium, ending with two shots on target but with just the one penalty-kick goal.

Jess Carter and Tierna Davidson also had to intervene during second-half stoppage time to clear the area in front of Ann-Katrin Berger's goal while the ball pinged around following a Thorns surge forward. There was no winner coming for Portland but they made it a nervy end to the second half as Gotham held on, and held onto what's now a double-digit unbeaten streak.
Portland and Gotham have now played two highly entertaining draws, following the 2-2 at Providence Park that went back and forth at a sometimes chaotic level. Even though Gotham is comfortably ahead of Portland in the NWSL Shield race, these teams could always meet again in the playoffs, a possibility that looks extra enticing after two memorable regular-season meetings.
Next up after this second meeting with Portland is the first of three away days in a row for Gotham, as they travel to Colorado to face expansion side Denver Summit FC on Sunday, September 6 at 2:00 pm ET at Centennial Stadium. Denver is the only team that's beaten Gotham at Sports Illustrated Stadium this season, so Gotham will be looking for some road retribution following that 0-2 loss at home way back on March 25 in the season's earliest stages.
