Gotham FC notched their second 1-0 away win in a row on Saturday evening thanks to a goal from Sam Kerr, who scored with a clever first-time redirection of a pass from Guro Reiten after a Houston Dash defender failed to clear a pass from Rose Lavelle intended for Reiten.
The strike from Kerr meant the Australia international tied Esther González as the club's all-time regular season scoring leader with 30 goals. It was Kerr's second league goal since making her return to Gotham, and at 80 career goals scored across all NWSL competitions, Kerr also moved past Christine Sinclair into third place for the most goals scored in league history, still trailing Lynn Biyendolo and Debinha.
"She has higher standards, higher expectations for herself and the team," acting Gotham coach Shaun Harris said of Kerr after the win. "She's really someone who pushes the team forward in the right direction. It's something that we really pride ourselves on, setting those standards, and she's definitely one of the front runners of setting the tone, setting the standard."

Kerr failed to convert a penalty kick early on in the first half, sending the ball just wide of the Houston goal. The striker was quick to dust herself off, consistently putting herself in Dash keeper Jane Campbell's penalty area to create several opportunities in front of goal.
"She's a competitor," Harris said. "She wants to win, she wants to win trophies, and she's always said that's why she's here. It's a really good asset for her, not just on the pitch but off the pitch."
For the first time since May 1, the Dash were shut out at home. Gotham has Shelby Hogan to thank for that. The 28-year-old made her second consecutive start for the Bats in place of Ann-Katrin Berger.
Hogan ended her second straight start with six saves, her third clean sheet in as many starts during the season, as well as the club's league-leading 11th shutout.
"To be able to step in and show what I can do as well was exciting," Hogan told the NWSL+ broadcast after the win. "But I’m just super proud of the group and super excited to get the three points, and we’re all really excited to get back to New Jersey."
Hogan denied the Dash an early lead with a fingertip redirect of rookie Kat Rader’s shot while also preventing an equalizer nearly 90 minutes later with a sprawling stop of Sarah Puntigam’s strike during second half stoppage time.
Harris confirmed post-match that Gotham's first choice goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, who started against the Portland Thorns at the top of Gotham's three-game away swing, was merely resting rather than injured.
"She’s a key player for us," Harris said of Berger. "We want to make sure we can preserve her for the rest of the season, so it's just about when we can take these moments and give her a rest."

Rest is sure to be at the top of Gotham's priorities given the amount of injuries the squad is dealing with, and given the multiple three-match weeks they've dealt with since the start of July. After a nasty injury while playing against the Portland Thorns, defender Emily Sonnett has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to fix a ruptured patellar tendon in her left knee. Newly-signed midfielder Denise O'Sullivan is also sidelined for the moment with a "freak accident" knee injury suffered during training, as confirmed by Harris.
"On one side, we're devastated that we're losing players," Harris said prior to Gotham's win against Bay FC. "On the other side, it's going to be interesting to see who we can rely on and who can step in and fill those shoes. It's a good opportunity for the rest of the squad."
The win extended Gotham's unbeaten run to six matches and put the club back at the top of the NWSL table, pending Washington Spirit's result against San Diego Wave.
After beating the Dash, the Bats finally return home following three straight away matches, set to finally play at Sports Illustrated Stadium for the first time since May 31, a match they also won 1-0 over Houston. Gotham will next welcome San Diego Wave to Harrison, New Jersey, with kickoff set for 8:00 pm ET on Friday, August 7.
