Make it seven straight unbeaten for Gotham FC as they made a winning homecoming, beating San Diego Wave FC 1-0 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in what was their first home match in their usual home venue since May 31.
Jaedyn Shaw, who played for San Diego Wave for three seasons, curled home a goal just before halftime, and the Gotham defense kept yet another clean sheet — their third straight and 12th in NWSL so far this year — to remain at the top of the NWSL table. This was also Gotham's third straight 1-0 win, so they've been consistent while being unbeaten.
San Diego was the last team to beat Gotham, winning 2-0 at Snapdragon Stadium on July 4, and the Wave is also one of Gotham's chief rivals in the chase for the top spot in the NWSL standings.
San Diego pushed for a late equalizer after playing from behind for the entire second half, but found no way through. The win means Gotham holds an eight-point advantage over San Diego, and maybe more importantly, it gives the Bats a four-point edge over their closest Shield rival, Washington Spirit.

Shaw, Dudley pace the attack
Jaedyn Shaw was influential from early on in this match. In the 16th minute, Shaw floated a cross over the San Diego defense that fell right onto the left foot of Guro Reiten, but the Norwegian fullback rattled her first-time effort off the post.
That was one of two chances created by Shaw on the night, though her biggest moment ended up being orchestrated by another 21-year-old Gotham attacker: Jordynn Dudley, the runaway favorite for this year's NWSL Rookie of the Year award.
In the lead-up to the match-winning goal, Dudley showed off her hold-up play while receiving the ball centrally and surrounded by three San Diego defenders. The rookie out of Florida State circumnavigated the Wave's defense then pinged a precise pass to Shaw in space on the left side, with Shaw switching the ball onto her right foot and then curling a shot cleverly past San Diego goalkeeper Sandra Paños.

"Scoring goals is always amazing. I love scoring goals. I'm an attacker," Shaw told the media after the match. "To finally play at home was so nice. Being able to play in front of our home crowd, even through the rain, lightning and monsoon, whatever just happened a couple of hours ago, was incredible. Thanks to all the fans who stayed and fought through that for us. It was really amazing to score
in front of our home fans. I'm hoping to continue helping the team win."
It was a well-taken finish from Shaw, her fifth goal of the season, and a third assist for Dudley, tying Dudley for second place in assists among NWSL rookies. This was also the third time this season that Shaw and Dudley have combined for a goal.
"Jordynn's incredible. She's so difficult to defend. You've got someone who can run in behind, connect the ball and hold up the play. She changes the game at any moment," said acting Gotham coach Shaun Harris postmach. "Any time she's around the ball, she's dangerous. She's got more levels to go. We're just scratching the surface."
Dudley did a little bit of everything against San Diego, creating four chances, completing three successful dribbles, and winning four tackles. She also drew two fouls and committed a foul of her own in what was a tight, physical match that Gotham ultimately saw out for another win.
"That's part of our DNA as a team. To be physical, to be able to grind out games and to be able to set the tone early," said Jaedyn Shaw. "That's something we work on on the training pitch. We want to bring that every single game, not just in the first five minutes but for the whole 90 minutes."
Weathering more injury absences
While Gotham played a string of three straight away matches prior to hosting the Wave, their roster continued to undergo big changes.
Esther González and the team mutually agreed to part ways, while Emily Sonnett was lost to the season-ending injury list with a ruptured patellar tendon in her knee. Newly-signed midfielder Denise O'Sullivan also suffered a knee injury in training that has her out on a week-to-week basis, though she's not out for the season. The club also transferred Khyah Harper to Houston Dash, so there were lots of changes to the Gotham depth chart heading into this return match at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
The in-flux state of the squad hasn't slowed down Gotham. They managed to sign 33-year-old midfielder and Rockville Centre, New York native Meredith Speck, who wasn't yet available for the Wave match. They also got midfielder Taryn Torres back off the injured list after completing her rehab from a torn ACL.
Torres came off the bench to play the final 19 minutes of the win over San Diego, while defender Bruninha made her first start of the NWSL season, and her first since the 2025 NWSL Semifinal against Orlando last November. Bruninha's return allowed Jess Carter to slide back into central defense, and that back four, also featuring captain Tierna Davidson and Reiten, showed no ill-effects from the personnel shuffle as they kept yet another clean sheet.
Change has been a constant for Gotham this summer, but they've not been hampered by it, and the defending NWSL Champions now sit atop the league table while in the midst of a lengthy unbeaten streak.
They'll try to extend that streak when they play yet another Friday night match under the lights at Sports Illustrated Stadium, set to host Kansas City Current at 8:00 pm ET on Friday, August 14 in what will be a Ted Lasso season four, episode one rematch.
