• Matt Miazga officially joins through end of 2026 season

Matt Miazga is officially a new New York City FC player, with the club announcing the defender was acquired off waivers through the end of the 2026 season.

A short-term commitment only for NYCFC, with the 31-year-old defender claimed after he was waived and bought out of his contract by FC Cincinnati earlier in September. Miazga earned over $1.6 million annually with Cincinnati, but he was in the final year of that contract before being bought out and moved on.

Now in New York City, Miazga will wear the No 3 shirt and has eight games left in the regular season to make a mark with his new team. He joins a defensive corps that has relied on James Sands and Thiago Martins as its top-choice center-back pairing in recent weeks, with Raul Gustavo and Max Murray also in the mix at that position.

Miazga's performances have slipped in recent seasons for FC Cincinnati, following a major knee injury suffered during the 2024 season. If you go by American Soccer Analysis's net goals added (net g+) metric, which is meant to be a measure of a player's entire on-ball value both offensively and defensively, Miazga rates near the bottom of the MLS player pool for the 2026 season.
