Ivory Coast's Yan Diomande on his World Cup breakout: 'Everything was good for me today'

After the 1-0 win for Ivory Coast, the RB Leipzig winger discussed his Player of the Match performance, a rumored move to Liverpool, and overcoming Ecuador in the heat of Philadelphia.

If you didn't know who Yan Diomande was coming in to the 2026 World Cup, you do now.

The 19-year-old Red Bull Leipzig winger had a breakout performance in his World Cup debut, grabbing all the headlines as the Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 in a wild match on Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA.

Although he didn't score the game-winning goal — that was substitute Amad Diallo — he was named Player of the Match after a memorable 90 minutes, proving exactly why Liverpool is rumored to be interested in making a $100 million move for him.

"I'm playing like this in my club, so here it is a little bit different," he said of his performance following the win over Ecuador. "I'm trying to work for the team and do everything for the team, and everything was good for me today, and I'm happy for that. I want to continue until the end of the competition."

Both sides had chances, but it was the Ivory Coast that came out on top in the 90th minute to silence a Lincoln Financial Field crowd mostly wearing yellow jerseys and supporting Ecuador.

A performance to remember

Starting on the right wing then moving to the left in the second half, Diomande led the game in touches (80), chances created (five), duels won (11), progressive carries (15), and passes in the attacking third (22). Additionally, he had 12 touches in Ecuador's box, made five tackles, and totaled three passes into the final third.

To put those numbers into perspective, Diomande became the first player Opta has on record since 1966 to create at least five chances, make at least five tackles, win at least 10 duels and have at least 10 touches in the opposition’s box in a World Cup match.

"Individual performances aren't the most important thing for me; the most important thing is the collective," he said. "If I manage to shine individually within the collective, that makes me happy. But I'm already happy for the victory."

The Ivory Coast entered the game as the underdogs because of Ecuador's outstanding record in CONMEBOL qualifying. La Tri finished second place — ahead of Brazil and Colombia — lost only twice, and conceded just five goals, the fewest of any South American side.

Because of Ecuador's stout defense, the Ivory Coast had to rely on its wingers to create chances, giving Diomande the freedom to dribble enthusiastically and run at defenders. He electrically burned past Piero Hincapié — Arsenal's starting left-back — several times in what turned into an exciting one-sided battle.

"We know Ecuador is a big team, and the weather was crazy because it was too hot here," he said. "We were patient to wait for our opportunity, and we got it, and we scored, which is good for the team."

From Florida to Anfield?

With Diomande's sheer confidence, it's easy to forget he's only 19. Not too long ago, he was playing in Florida while attending DME Sports Academy, and helping lead semi-professional club AS Frenzi to a 2023 UPSL title.

Diomande then joined La Liga side CD Leganés in November 2024, but made just 10 appearances before moving to RB Leipzig that summer, when the club activated his $20 million release clause.

In 36 appearances last season for Leipzig, he recorded 13 goals and nine assists, playing a key role in the club's Champions League-clinching third-place finish in the German Bundesliga. Now, he's linked with a huge move to Liverpool FC in England, pursued by their new manager Andoni Iraola.

"Why not?" he said on joining Liverpool and playing in the Premier League. "In the end, my agents take care of that, and I'm more focused on the World Cup — that's the most important thing because it's every four years, so I'm making the most of it, and we'll see about the rest later."

Coming off a statement win over Ecuador, Diomande and the Ivory Coast could punch their ticket to the knockout stages with a positive result against Germany on Saturday, June 20 in Kansas City.

"We are waiting for them," Diomande said. "The most important thing is to stay calm, be humble, and wait for the game. We are so excited to play against a big team, and we are ready."
