Brooklyn FC put together a dominant showing against the New York Cosmos in a 3-0 win earned during a downpour on Saturday afternoon.
The first-ever meeting between the New York area sides in the Prinx Tires USL Cup showed the overall power of the Brooklyn offense, and the continued struggles of the Cosmos reshuffled roster.
The vibes at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey, are not good right now, doubly so as the attendance woes and bad luck with the weather continue for the Cosmos.
With the rest of the Matchday 1 results from USL Cup group play, Brooklyn is the early top dog in their six-team group of Northeastern USL Championship and USL League One teams. A positive note for a side that's also still trying to find itself in league play.
Cosmos: 13 shots, 4 shots on target, 44.7% possession, 387 passes, 77.8% pass accuracy, 19 fouls, 4 corners, 5 saves

• Brooklyn, Juan Carlos Obregón, 35'

Brooklyn on the front foot early
Coming off a strong performance against Sacramento Republic FC that resulted in just a 1-1 draw after Brooklyn defender Gabriel Alves committed a hard foul in stoppage time to concede a penalty, Brooklyn FC entered this match with clear attacking intent.
Brooklyn started the match in a high press, trying to get the Cosmos out of position early. Brooklyn looked like the stronger and more physical side. Cosmos had early chances, but it was the visitors who remained confident and created early pressure near the Cosmos box. Several shots were parried by the Cosmos defense.
In the sixth minute, Thomas Vancaeyezeele applied well-timed pressure, dispossessing the Cosmos and accelerating down the right side. He attempted a diagonal ball toward goal, but struck the post.
Former FC Cincinnati 2 player Peter Mangione had a huge role in the Brooklyn attack, forcing multiple corner kicks that couldn’t be converted into actual goals. Though the pressure was mounting.
The Cosmos elected to have their goalkeeper coach and third-string back-up, Boris Del Valle, between the posts while Tristan Stephani watched from the sidelines. Otherwise, much of this starting XI for the Cosmos is one the team would use in USL League One matches.
The breakthrough for Brooklyn came in the 35th minute through a well-worked attacking sequence. Defender Callum Frogson sent a cross into the box, where Juan Carlos “JC” Obregón Jr. rose over the backline and headed the ball from point-blank range. The goal gave BKFC the lead, and it was Frogson’s first assist for the club.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 39th minute when Gabriel Alves picked up the ball outside the box, striking a banger left-footed effort from distance. He had already gotten around Ajmeer Spengler, and his shot was somewhat stopped by Del Valle, but trickled into the box.
The crushing blow came in the 43rd minute. Mangione was able to capitalize on a loose ball in the midfield, with shouts for a foul against Cosmos midfielder Christan Koffi going unanswered, sending a ball into the middle and finding Abdoulaye Kanté. His right-footed shot passed a non-moving, stuck-to-his-spot Del Valle and made it 3-0 before the half. The goal marked Kanté’s first for the club, while Mangione recorded his first assist.
Brooklyn entered halftime firmly in control.
BKFC stays in control
The second half followed a similar pattern. Brooklyn dictated play while limiting the Cosmos to very few attacking opportunities.
The introduction of Brooklyn's leading goal scorer this season, Markus Anderson, added pace and directness. His movement created additional space in the final third.
The Cosmos tried to respond by pushing higher up the pitch and creating moments in the attacking third. The home side worked hard and had more possession and more shots on target in the second half. But Brooklyn remained organized defensively and limited clear chances on goal.
In goal for Brooklyn, Lukas Burns continued to impress while making his debut, making multiple saves, including key stops from close range and distance, to secure a clean sheet and anchor a strong defensive performance. As the match wore on, the Cosmos continued to press and search for a way back into it, but were unable to convert.
From that point, Brooklyn managed the match effectively, maintaining possession and controlling the pace. The defensive unit remained composed, ensuring Burns had minimal work to do for long stretches. Included in the boring second half was a substitute appearance by former New York City FC forward Tommy McNamara, and a second yellow card foul and sending off for Cosmos midfielder and Guatemala national team star Néstor Cabrera in stoppage time.
More than just a win
Brooklyn FC delivered one of its most complete performances of the season. The high press, structured midfield play, and disciplined defending set the tone from the opening whistle.
Every phase of the game reflected a team growing into its identity. The midfield dictated the rhythm, the attack finished its chances, and the defense ensured there was no path back for the Cosmos.
For a club in its inaugural season, this match was more than a win. It was a statement that Brooklyn FC is building something real, structured, and competitive within the USL Championship. They’ll try to keep the momentum as they visit The Miami FC at Pitbull Stadium this Saturday, May 2, at 7:00 pm.
For the Cosmos, this might be reality setting in at the moment. Head coach David Corti and his side haven’t found consistency, whether it's due to injuries or poor play from young players.
For this Cup game, the easy finger to point is at Del Valle, who made his professional debut on Saturday and looked like it at times. But the Cosmos defense still bent a lot against Brooklyn, and would have probably still trailed at halftime with Derrek Chan in goal instead.
Sebastián Guenzatti had two shots all game, one on target and one off. The USL legend won a lot of free kicks, but when your only shot on target is a shot off a free kick early in the second half with your team already down by three, it might be time to consider other options up top.
The Cosmos will look to regroup as they head to the far Northeast this coming Saturday to visit Portland Hearts of Pine at 5:00 pm at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Maine.
