Cosmos earn much-needed win thanks to Chevone Marsh goal, first clean sheet since March

The newest addition to the Cosmos attack made an instant impact, with 32-year-old Chevone Marsh scoring the match-winning goal on his debut in a 1-0 home win over FC Naples.

The New York Cosmos were desperate for a good result and finally got one, winning 1-0 over FC Naples at Hinchliffe Stadium on the strength of a debut goal from new signing Chevone Marsh.

Marsh was just formally unveiled as a new Cosmos player on Tuesday, July 7, though he'd been training with the Cosmos and playing in friendlies for the club for weeks, waiting on administrative issues like USL clearance and the sorting of his visa before he could be announced as a new signing.

The timing of his debut ended up being perfect, as the 32-year-old Jamaica international forward proved to be the difference-maker in a tight contest on a warm Wednesday night in northern New Jersey. Marsh showed his well-established quality at USL League One level on the match's lone goal, flashing his finishing skill to cap off what was a neat sequence of back-to-front passing from the Cosmos.

Really tidy passing sequence from the New York Cosmos to get Chevone Marsh a debut goal. 1-0 over Naples. Love the drop in from Ajmeer Spengler, the assister; he helps draw the Naples midfield and let Marsh isolate against a defender further ahead.

Marsh didn't hesitate once a long forward pass from Ajmeer Spengler landed at his feet, firing a pinpoint-precise shot across the Naples goal and into the far-corner to net the match's only goal in the 56th minute.

The Cosmos desperately needed that goal and the result against Naples. The team went seven straight league games between victories, a stretch that plunged them to the very bottom of the USL League One table.

They'd showed some signs of on-field improvement while playing their highest-profile summer friendly against Liga MX's Santos Laguna during a lull in USL League One action on June 28, but didn't back that up, falling to a 0-3 defeat at home on the Fourth of July in the match that directly preceded this win over FC Naples.

The performance against Naples represented an across-the-board improvement for the Paterson, New Jersey-based side. This was the first Cosmos clean sheet kept since March 28, a 2-0 home win over Fort Wayne FC, so the shutout might be the most impressive feat pulled off by the home team. It had been 12 matches in all competitions since they'd shut out an opponent, an even longer drought than the winless streak.

It didn't come easy for the Cosmos, as Naples dominated possession (62% to the Cosmos' 38%) and passed the ball around at will at Hinchliffe, but found no breakthrough. The visitors hit the woodwork twice, but the Cosmos worked for their shutout, making 29 defensive clearances of the ball and blocking a pair of shot attempts.

It's a much-needed first clean sheet with the Cosmos for Javier Garcia, himself a new-ish addition to the squad after arriving from Athletic Club Boise in early May. Garcia wore the captain's armband for the Cosmos and saw out the win, which the Cosmos hope can be a springboard to better results to come this summer.

Chevone Marsh is officially a Cosmos player, as the club also announces the arrival of midfielder Frankie Ljucovic, most recently with NWS Spirit FC in the third tier of Australia’s soccer pyramid.

New York next plays up in Maine against Portland Hearts of Pine, but that's a USL Cup match as part of Group 5 action. The Cosmos aren't going to advance out of their group, in fifth place out of six teams heading into this their group finale, but they could spoil any chance of advancement that still remains for their USL League One rivals from Portland, Maine.

They'd need to break another trend if they're to play spoilers in Maine, because the Cosmos only have one away win in all competitions this season, and that came in the USL Cup against local rivals Westchester SC up in Mount Vernon, New York.

The win against Naples and the on-the-fly adjustments being made to the Cosmos' roster might be enough to get the club on a better trajectory, at least if Chevone Marsh's debut is any indicator of what's to come.
