Gotham FC got exactly the kind of result and performance they needed when they beat Bay FC 3-0 at a rainy and chilly Sports Illustrated Stadium, their first action after a three-week layoff for the FIFA international window.
Gotham entered this match needing to see the ball go into the opposing net at home for the first time this season, and needing a win after going four straight NWSL matches without one.
They checked off both items in their 3-0 triumph, a first home win of 2026 which also included the debut of Gotham's big new signing, left-footed Norwegian star Guro Reiten, most recently of Chelsea FC in England.
The creative midfielder had to line up in an unusual position in her debut, though, as injuries across the Gotham back line led coach Juan Carlos Amorós to deploy Reiten at left-back, with another more attacking-minded wide player, Midge Purce, also filling in at right-back.
Being without the newly-injured United States women's national team defender duo Lilly Reale and Emily Sonnett added to the challenges presented by the longer-term absences of defenders Bruninha, Mandy Freeman, and Kayla Duran, and made the interesting lineup decisions somewhat necessary. They worked, and just in time for a Gotham side that needed a change in fortunes.
Finally, a breakthrough
Gotham entered this match with two goals scored through five matches played, tied for second-fewest in the 16-team NWSL with Chicago Stars FC, and ahead of only expansion side Boston Legacy FC, which has scored exactly one goal while losing all of its first five matches.
They weren't scoring, and Gotham also badly struggled to get quality shots on target through their first five NWSL matches. Their shots on target percentage of 27.8% was third-worst in the NWSL entering the Bay FC match, and they had the league's lowest goals-per-shots-on-target ratio, 0.13, before their outburst against Bay FC.
It was a different story against Bay FC, as Gotham peppered Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz with 25 shot attempts and forced her into 12 saves, making some NWSL history in the process.

Gotham kept pushing for goals, though their breakthrough opening goal came in the 20th minute with help from Bay FC, an own goal scored as defender Karlie Lema attempted a clearance but did the opposite, and in the process backheeled her goalkeeper Silkowitz in the mouth as she attempted to intervene, drawing first blood in multiple ways.
Everything tilted Gotham's way from then on, with Bay only attempting three shots and putting one on target, and with Rose Lavelle involved in all three Gotham goals: Her centering pass teed up the shot that led to the Bay own goal, then she scored in the 40th minute, and drew the penalty that Esther González converted at 45'+6' shortly before halftime.

Day of firsts
Guro Reiten making her first appearance for Gotham is the headline-grabber, but another highly-regarded new signing got a first in the win over Bay FC, as well, with rookie Jordynn Dudley recording a first-career goal contribution while picking up a silky assist on Lavelle's 40th-minute goal.
In the starting lineup for just the second time since joining Gotham out of Florida State University before the 2026 season, Dudley's footwork and dribbling skill made multiple Bay defenders miss while bearing down on goal, before laying a pass off for Lavelle to place just inside the far post.

Dudley went 76 minutes, created two big chances, and played three key passes, while also attempting four shots of her own and putting two on target, though without that first NWSL goal just yet.
Dudley, Lavelle, and Jaedyn Shaw as the attacking midfield trio behind Esther was a potent combination and too much for the Bay defense to deal with, and that's while one of the team's other prime attacking midfield options — Reiten — deputized at left-back, with the Norwegian saying after the match, "It was a lot of information to take in but I had to go out there and do my best," while admitting her experience at left-back was "minimum."
While injuries created a makeshift backline, Gotham still kept a clean sheet, and more importantly showed that their attacking talent can still score goals. They hadn't done it at all at Sports Illustrated Stadium until this game, playing to two scoreless draws against Orlando Pride and NC Courage and losing, 2-0, to visiting expansion side Denver Summit.
All welcome signs as Gotham begins a busy portion of the schedule, playing at midweek in Chicago before returning to Sports Illustrated Stadium next weekend to host Racing Louisville.
