Gotham FC extended their unbeaten streak to five games with a 2-0 win against the Seattle Reign at Lumen Field on Friday night.
The shutout win also made the Bats the first NWSL team in history to keep seven clean sheets in the first 10 games of their season.
Gotham forward Jaedyn Shaw finished a right-footed shot off a pass from Savannah McCaskill for her fourth goal of the season while Gotham's captain Tierna Davidson scored a second-half goal to seal the win for her club.
"We're always looking for ways to push to the next level," said acting head coach Shaun Harris after the game. "I think we're going in the right direction. We're happy with the way the team's going. We still think there's another level. We still think there's a few more goals in there."
Gotham remains on an upward trajectory following a shaky start to the season, finding their rhythm amidst roster changes and the pressure to defend their NWSL title.
Another rookie difference-maker
While the team as a whole has improved, a large part of the attacking credit should go to rookie Jordynn Dudley.
The 21-year-old forward has found her footing on professional turf, inserting herself seamlessly into Gotham's front line. She is exceptionally good playing in the wide attacking areas along the wing, and is especially dangerous when isolated against a single defender.
"The coaching staff has done a great job finding a position where she can thrive and be herself," said head coach Juan Carlos Amorós of Dudley's development. "It’s never easy coming into a roster like this as a rookie, so for her to work her way into a starting role and continue thriving is a testament to the type of player she is."
Dudley has a fluidity in her play that allows her to control her dribbling while outpacing her opponent. Her ability to recognize a teammate making runs into space and delivering the right pass at the right moment has earned her two assists, to go along with one goal scored so far this season. Although, it's not exclusively her offensive play that makes her such a standout player.
"Something that's so underrated is her work rate defensively," Davidson said. "She's pressing, she's winning balls back for us in high spaces, and she's coming back defensively when she needs to. That's such an underrated part of her game."
Impressive doesn't seem to adequately describe how Dudley has adapted to the league, which is a testament to the Bats' emphasis on nurturing rookie talent. Gotham paves the way for rookies to develop, as seen in the performances from Lilly Reale and Sarah Schupansky last season.
New-look defense continues to deliver
Dudley's addition to the team is just one of many roster changes made to Gotham's 2026 squad. The club's defensive line has featured a series of new faces to accommodate for injuries and returning players, and Tierna Davidson's return from injury this season is a heavy factor in how the backline has shifted.
"She's now starting to find her groove," Harris said. "She's an asset for us both on the ball and off the ball, and the way she can step in and read plays really changes the picture."
While playing against Seattle, Gotham's star center back scored her first goal since August 2019.
Gotham's coaching staff praised Davidson for the hard work to come back from the ACL injury that ended her 2025 season. Her work is translating on the pitch, between her goal against Seattle and her accurate passing while playing against Boston the week prior.
While Davidson made a full-time return, other defenders have gone down (Kayla Duran) or not yet returned from injury (Mandy Freeman). The injuries have forced Gotham's coaches to approach games with a rotational roster, testing out different lineups to find the perfect positions for players.
"A big word for us is consistency," said Shaw. "We don’t want to just be a second-half team, even though that has historically been the phrase for our team. For us, it’s about honing in on the little details and being consistent as individuals so we can then be consistent as a team."
Midge Purce, who typically plays as a forward for the Bats, now finds herself playing right-back while Dudley fills her spot up front to form a new attacking trio consisting of Dudley, Shaw and Spanish striker Esther González.
New Gotham signee Guro Reiten, normally an attacking midfielder, joined Purce in the back line, flanking Davidson and Jess Carter as a left-back, playing that position for the first time.
The lineup against Seattle remained unchanged from the draw with Boston last week, aside from the addition of Sofia Cook in place of Sarah Schupansky, both getting looks while Rose Lavelle recovers from a hamstring injury.
With the new lineup starting to take shape, especially with the attacking trio consistently scoring, it appears that Gotham is building towards a dominant mid-season run.
"As far as performance and what we're setting up, I think that the team is setting a new standard,” said Shaun Harris. "We’re trying to maintain that and build from there."
