If it was ever in doubt, it was only momentary.
France clinched a spot in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 with a 3-0 win over Sweden at NY/NJ Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. A dominant display from Les Bleus saw Kylian Mbappé notch a brace while teammate Michael Olise had a stellar bridesmaid's performance, collecting two assists.
After rolling through the group by scoring a combined 10 goals against Senegal, Iraq, and Norway, France returned to New Jersey rounding into form and looking more and more like World Cup favorites. Sweden, as one of the eight best third-place teams in the tournament, played like a wildcard and an underdog, with a few counter attacks and fast breaks the most they could muster.
In a game where not even the 90-degree temperatures in East Rutherford, New Jersey could slow down France's attack, Sweden never really stood a chance.
France: 3.17 xG, 25 shots, 12 shots on target, 61% possession, 551 passes, 88% pass accuracy, 14 fouls, 9 corners, 3 saves
Sweden: 0.66 xG, 8 shots, 3 shots on target, 39% possession, 351 passes, 79% pass accuracy, 10 fouls, 1 corners, 9 saves
Goals:
• France, Kylian Mbappé, 45'
France, Bradley Barcola, 53'
France, Kylian Mbappé, 74'

Mbappé makes more history
Kylian Mbappé has played 18 World Cup games in his career. He is already second all-time in goals scored in tournament history. A brace against Sweden has raised his total to 18, only one off the all-time record of 19 currently held by Lionel Messi. Who, by the way, is also actively playing at this World Cup with Argentina, if you hadn't noticed.
It didn't look as though it was going to be Mbappé's day in the early going. France was in control in the early stages but had trouble finding a way through a stubborn Swedish defense.
In the 20th minute, the France captain looked to have broken the deadlock. He was played through one-on-one and slid the ball into the corner of the net, but a narrow offside call ruined his celebration before it could get started.
Just past the half-hour mark, another chance for France. Jules Koundé made a run and picked out Mbappé, but his shot rang off the post. The Frenchman raised his arms to the air in anguish, seemingly pleading with whatever force he could for a reprieve after a rare miss.
That reprieve finally came in the 45th minute, with his team not knocking on the door but trying to bust it off its hinges. Mbappé kicked it in, both the metaphorical door and the match-winning goal, when a short corner was played to Olise (more on him shortly), then to Ousmane Dembélé, and finally to Mbappé. He cut inside and curled a shot into the far corner.
It had been coming, it had been earned.
He added to his total right after the second hydration break in the 74th minute. Another Olise pass, this time with the FC Bayern Munich attacker sliding a wonderful through-ball past multiple Swedish defenders and to the feet of Mbappé.
One touch. Top corner.
As he left the field in the 85th minute, Kylian raised his hands once again — this time to salute the cheering crowd, doing a small twirl to try and acknowledge them all. There would be no all-time World Cup goals record broken today, but Mbappé did set a record for goals scored in the knockout rounds. The brace brings him to 10 goals in the knockouts, passing Brazil legends Ronaldo and Leonidas, who each scored eight times in do-or-die games.
Mbappé is now tied with Messi atop the Golden Boot standings at this World Cup, with each superstar sitting on six goals, though more important is the race for that overall World Cup goals record, where Messi leads by one goal but in what is likely his final World Cup — but not Mbappé's.
Olise does everything but score
If anyone deserved a goal in this game, it was Michael Olise. The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder had two assists, multiple chances, and a contender for footnote highlight moment of the tournament.
Olise got everything he could in this game except a goal. He just couldn't beat Sweden keeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
The 36th minute saw what could have been one of the greatest goals in World Cup history. A ball into the box falls towards Olise, who threw himself backwards into the air and bicycle kicked a shot on goal. The shot beat Sweden’s goalkeeper Zetterstrom...but bounced off the post. The loose ball fell to Dembélé who put his shot high over the crossbar.
Olise had plenty of other moments. A long attempt in the 61st minute looked to be heading into the lower-left corner of the net before Zetterstrom dove to sit Olise back in the proverbial hotel room chair with Les Bleus. Four minutes later, a long run up the left side fed Olise in the middle, where his shot was deflected wide-left for a corner kick.
Overall, it might be first-world to feel bad for Olise. His two assists continued to show his devistating relationship with the Mbappé. He has the feet to get past defenses, but more over his passes can pierce through backlines and find either the Golden Boot contender, or someone else like Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola.
Case in point: France's second goal.
A nutmeg pass by Olise through the legs of Sweden center-back Gustaf Lagerbielke to feed Barcola, who slammed it into the upper netting in the 53rd minute. He's damn good and if Mbappé wasn't taking up most of the headlines and the goals, this would be his show.
Absolutely ridiculous that Olise is this aggressive in his passing and this accurate. His 92% pass completion in the attacking third is what your DM gives you. Meanwhile Olise's out here sliding the ball through lines to put it on a platter for his forwards.

Independence Day in Philadelphia
The Round of 16 awaits France, where they will play Paraguay in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 4. The 4th of July match in the city of the Declaration of Independence's signing was one of the most anticipated, pre-marketed games in the tournament, and it will feature an extremely hot French side taking on a David who's already slayed a Goliath.
The winner of that game will head to Boston Stadium on Tuesday, July 9 for a quarterfinal matchup against whoever wins between Canada and Morocco.
