Earlier this month, UOL reported that SC Corinthians Paulista was facing negotiations and threats of escalation to FIFA over around $2.5 million in debt owed to New York City FC over the loan of Talles Magno.
According to Fábio Lázaro's report, Corinthians owes New York City FC $1.5 million after not exercising their option to buy Talles, plus $850,000 in loan fees related to the 23-year-old Brazilian's second stint with Corinthians when his loan got extended through to the end of 2025, with the report noting that those amounts are also subject to "interest and inflation adjustments."

It's part of a wider debt crisis surrounding Corinthians at the moment, as according to a separate report from UOL, the Brazilian club is already under a FIFA transfer ban and unable to register any new players due to an outstanding debt owed to another East Coast MLS club, Philadelphia Union, over the signing of Jose Martínez, a player you may remember from the time he flipped double-birds during a memorably hostile Union-NYCFC match in 2022.
They also have other debt issues with FC Midtjylland of Denmark and Club Atlético Talleres of Argentina, so lack of payment isn't something exclusive to NYCFC.
New York City first loaned Talles Magno to Corinthians in August 2024, and his initial loan was set to be through June 2025 with an option for it to be extended through December 2025. He's still on a Designated Player contract with NYCFC through 2027, a deal which earns him $1.36 million in guaranteed compensation this season.
The forward, who NYCFC paid a reported $8 million transfer fee to acquire in 2021, made 10 appearances so far this season in MLS.
All his MLS action came as a substitute because Talles picked up a calf injury during warm-ups ahead of what would have been his first MLS start of the season against DC United on May 3 at Citi Field.
Talles scored two goals in MLS and three in US Open Cup play when healthy in 2026, and this knowledge of financial irregularity around his past loan spells back in Brazil adds interesting context to the club's decision to keep him around with New York City for this 2026 season.
