Pascal Jansen: 'We expected more from today'

What the New York City FC coach said about the 2-0 loss to DC United, featuring more set-piece trouble, a worrying Aiden O'Neill ankle situation, and how he views Malachi Jones.

Jansen from his post-DC press conference.

The New York City FC winless run in the league reached seven games with the Pigeons' 2-0 defeat at the hands of DC United Saturday afternoon in Flushing.

DC's Louis Munteanu bagged a brace despite the visitors maintaining less than 30% possession. DC still outshot New York City a whopping 19 to 9 on the day. DC was credited with 2.79 expected goals (xG) off seven shots on target, while New York City, fielding a nearly-full-strength Starting XI, managed just 0.56 xG. Coming off an emphatic win away at Red Bull New York in the US Open Cup midweek, much more was expected of the Pigeons come the weekend.

Pascal Jansen said as much when he opened his post-game press conference, saying "we expected more from today. But the thing is, we get ourselves into trouble with the [set-pieces]."

And get into trouble with set-pieces New York City did, twice. The Pigeons conceded DC's 29th-minute opener via a long-throw in, with defenders Kai Trewin and Thiago Martins making a mess of the ball swung in, with Munteanu finding a free channel to pounce inside five yards.

Then in the second half, Munteanu found the back of the net from the penalty spot, albeit courtesy of a questionable on-field decision from referee Ismail Elfath on 73 minutes. Jansen made sure to express his discontent towards that decision, saying the decision "...for me, was a very hard one to understand what even happened. Whatever he saw, I don't think was worth a pen."
