New York City FC stumbles in trap game, settles for draw with Toronto

After picking up six points from a possible six to begin the second half of the Major League Soccer season, New York City FC dropped points for the first time post-World Cup, drawing 1-1 with Toronto FC at Yankee Stadium.

A match that had "trap-game" written all over it, Toronto came into Friday night winless in their last 12 matches across all competitions, and began the match like a side low on confidence. New York City, by contrast, was coming off two big wins over Columbus and Chicago, riding a rocket of momentum up the Eastern Conference table.

The first few minutes of the match were indicative of this, with the Pigeons taking barely six minutes to threaten the Toronto goal. Agustín Ojeda drew an early penalty that Nico Fernández Mercau dispatched with authority shortly thereafter for his 13th goal of the season.

New York City continued to apply pressure for the rest of the half, with chances from Talles Magno, Bénie Traoré, and Agustín Ojeda missing the mark before Toronto snatched the equalizer via a Djordje Mihailovic back-post finish on the stroke of halftime.

Yet, that was where Friday night's action climaxed. The second half saw both sides combine for 19 total shots, though only five efforts hit the target. New York City will rue a few missed chances from that second half, considering the Pigeons generated 1.17 expected goals (xG) after the break, but ultimately couldn't break the deadlock and were forced to settle for a single point under the Friday night lights.

Despite generating 2.12 xG, New York City lacked composure in front of goal on a night where many, including coach Pascal Jansen, expected the Pigeons to come away with a victory. After all, Toronto sits well outside the Eastern Conference playoff picture and hasn't picked up a win since early April.

Fernández Mercau, whose ninth-minute penalty ensured at least a point for New York City, only took one shot from open play, and that failed to hit the target. Bénie Traoré, for his part, had a brighter performance than what he exhibited in his first two appearances with the Boys in Blue, but he, too, only managed one off-target shot from open play.

New York City's player of the match was, arguably, James Sands, who made his third straight start in defense since returning from his St. Pauli loan this summer. He led the squad with 89 touches, along with chipping in six long balls and 14 defensive contributions to keep Toronto at a mere 0.17 xG in the second half.

As for Toronto, American striker Josh Sargent was left on an island during his 71-minute stint on the pitch, with the $20 million man failing to muster a single shot. The offense instead flowed through midfielder Djordje Mihailovic, who found the back of the net just before halftime when he fired home the rebound after Freese parried away a curled effort from the Hungarian Sallói.

Despite dropping points for the first time this summer, New York City still remains unbeaten since the end of the World Cup. Now back within the Top 5 of the Eastern Conference standings, the Pigeons will put their MLS focus on hold as they embark on a quest for Leagues Cup glory next week, opening Phase One against Liga MX side Santos Laguna on August 6 at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
