The number of New York City FC matches left in the regular season can now be counted on one hand, the final five chances to salvage the season beginning with a visit from LAFC in what is New York City's first time home following a three-match away swing.
Three of these five final games will be played at home, at Citi Field, where New York City has not won in 2026 across four previous visits, the most recent being a brutal loss to New England in early September.
Wins at any venue have been hard to come by lately for NYCFC, in the middle of a stretch with just one victory earned from 12 MLS matches played. The club is winless across its last four played and has lost four of its last six matches.
The back-to-back road losses in Chicago and Miami to start this three-match week have kept NYCFC down in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, outside the playoff picture and in need of a huge reversal in form to play their way back inside it.

Now, a rare chance to host Los Angeles Football Club finally arrives after this match bounced around the 2026 schedule. Two different schedule changes had these teams set to play in May, then in November, until finally ending up back on this the original announced date for this match.
Maybe it comes at a good time in the end? Despite featuring the imposing attacking pairing of Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-Min, LAFC has struggled since August, firing head coach Marc Dos Santos on September 27 after a 1W-5D-4L stretch in his final 10 MLS matches in charge. It's interim coach Xavi Tamarit now in charge of LAFC, and this will be his third match in charge and his first away game, following a draw and a win in LA at BMO Stadium.

Very little history between these teams, and of the four previous meetings, three were in Los Angeles, so even less history of LAFC playing in New York. These teams did play early in the 2025 season in Los Angeles, so there is at least some recent history.
