New York City FC wraps up a miserable season with one last match, traveling to Audi Field to play an also-eliminated-from-playoff-contention DC United.

There's nothing at stake beyond pride and final placement in the table as these teams meet in their 34th and final MLS match of this season. DC United hasn't qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs since 2019, a streak that continues through this season, and a streak that has gotten them labeled as "hopeless" by The Guardian.

New York City, meanwhile, choked away a 1-0 lead over CF Montréal and got knocked out of the running for a playoff spot, making this the second time out of the last four seasons that they've missed out on the MLS Cup Playoffs.

In theory, there's some club history on the line for NYCFC. The 2026 team has earned nine MLS wins heading into Decision Day (9W-12D-12L), so a 10th victory to get to 42 points would mean they'd pass the 2023 team in both wins and points earned, and thus avoid finishing with the second-worst record in club history.

A win or even a draw with DC United would mean NYCFC end the season on a five-match unbeaten run, though that's very little consolation, given that the season is also guaranteed to end when the final whistle gets blown by referee Matt Thompson at Audi Field.

New York City is winless across its last four head-to-head meetings with DC United, and they've actually lost back-to-back games vs DCU for the first time in the history of this fixture.

DC United won comfortably at Citi Field in May, a 2-0 result earned thanks to a brace from Louis Munteanu. DC also won 2-1 at Yankee Stadium last August, and they held NYCFC to back-to-back draws at Audi Field the last two times these teams met in the nation's capital.
