Matchday 11: New York City FC vs DC United at Citi Field

New York City got a big win midweek in the US Open Cup but will try to snap their winless run in MLS play as they host a DC United side that's unbeaten in three and coming off a win last weekend.

Update 5:10 pm ET: FULL TIME: New York City FC 0-2 DC United

New York City FC blanked by DC United as home woes continue
It’s now a seven-match winless streak for New York City in MLS play after a brace from DC’s Louis Munteanu and a nonexistent performance from the NYCFC attack earned the visitors a 2-0 win at Citi Field.

A brutal result for NYCFC as they are now winless in their last seven MLS matches, tied for the fourth-longest winless streak in the club's 12-season history.

Another Louis Munteanu goal settled the scoreline at 2-0, this one resulting from a penalty kick drawn after NYCFC's Keaton Parks was judged to have committed a foul while defending a long throw-in. New York City will get a full week's worth of rest and then try to snap their winless streak next Sunday afternoon, when they play a Mother's Day match against Columbus Crew at Yankee Stadium.

Update 4:10 pm ET: HALFTIME: New York City FC 0-1 DC United

As of halftime, New York City are very much in danger of extending their six-match winless run in MLS to a seventh game, as they're trailing at halftime against the "reigning" Wooden Spoon winners from the District of Columbia. They got beaten from another dead-ball situation, with DC getting their goal off a long-throw in, as their Designated Player Louis Munteanu was left unmarked and made no mistake.

Update 3:10 pm ET: At kickoff, lots of Starting XI-related intrigue, as Talles Magno had been set to start in MLS for the first time this season, but instead was scratched during warm-ups and the lineup now features Malachi Jones getting a second straight start following on the Hudson River Derby on Wednesday.

DC is without Tai Baribo as expected, though Sean Johnson starts in goal against his former team, as expected.

New York City FC returns to Queens to play their last match in the borough until September, as they host DC United at Citi Field on Matchday 11.

It's a meeting between two teams with identical records and points totals through 10 league games, 3W-3D-4L and 12 points, which says a lot about how big of a step back New York City has taken since beginning the season unbeaten through their first four league games. They enter this DC match still stuck in a six-match winless slump across their recent slate of MLS league games.

Still, the vibe around NYCFC improved significantly at midweek when they beat the Red Bulls in Harrison, NJ, to reach the US Open Cup quarterfinals. That 3-1 win over their arch-rivals quieted some of the frustrations following the double disappointment of a 4-4 draw with FC Cincinnati at home and a 1-0 loss at CF Montréal.

DC United have a spring in their step as they arrive in Queens, as well, as they're unbeaten in three straight MLS matches and coming directly off a 3-2 home win over Orlando City SC last Saturday night at Audi Field.

The current form comparison might favor DC, but their coach René Weiler says they'll be operating without striker Tai Baribo this afternoon at Citi Field, the Designated Player they picked up from Philadelphia Union this offseason who has scored six of the 11 goals DCU has in MLS so far this season. (Baribo is officially listed as Questionable on the injury report, whatever that might mean.)

What favors New York City is their head-to-head history when playing at home against DC United, something they'll do for the lucky 13th time this afternoon.
