For New York City FC it was the best of starts, then the worst of starts

The 2026 season started with a four-match unbeaten run, but New York City has since gone six MLS games without a win, a period of struggle defined by unusual defensive frailty and an attack reliant on the brilliance of two players.

New York City FC came flying out of the gates at the start of this Major League Soccer season, three wins and a draw in their first four played, but their current and ongoing six-match winless run in the league completely changed the tenor of the conversation around the 2026 team.

Instead of humming along among the top spots in the Eastern Conference, as it looked like they would when they defeated Colorado Rapids 3-1 at home on Matchday 4 to make it 10 points earned from an available 12, they've not won since and have mustered only two home draws, with each one of those "positive" results feeling like losses given that the visiting team scored an equalizer in stoppage time in each case.
