NYCFC II clinches playoff qualification on MLS Next Pro's Decision Day

New York City FC II completed the final full 28-match MLS Next Pro season of its existence by clinching the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and a direct berth into the Conference Quarterfinals.

The team isn't disappearing entirely, it's just playing a truncated, hard-to-take-serious "sprint season" in early 2027, then being rebranded and moved to Middlesex County, New Jersey for the first full European-calendar-style 2027/28 Next Pro season kicking off next July. So this is a last full hurrah for the entity known as "New York City FC II," proud owners of that Pigeon nickname and iconography.

Before all the big changes happen to this particular MLS Next Pro franchise, a 1-1 draw, then a penalty-shootout win on the road over Philadelphia Union 2 on MLS Next Pro's Decision Day, sealed what is the second playoff qualification in NYCFC II club history.

Drew Kerr of NYCFC II scored in the 43rd minute, then Philadelphia's Kellan LeBlanc (son of Brooklyn FC men's coach Marlon LeBlanc) blasted home a free kick to equalize in the 52nd minute.

NYCFC II might have won this in regulation and pushed itself even higher in the Eastern Conference table, but Cooper Flax had a penalty saved by Union 2 goalkeeper Andrew Rick in the 82nd minute, and NYCFC couldn't capitalize on having an 11v10 advantage for the final eight minutes of regulation plus five minutes of second-half stoppage time, with Philadelphia keeping it a 1-1 scoreline through the end of regulation.

Flax redeemed himself by converting his PK during the shootout that immediately followed the 90 minutes, with the Pigeons triumphing 2-1 in that shootout, as NYCFC II goalkeeper Mac Learned made two saves to help secure the win and the extra point in the standings. Flax, a first-team Homegrown signing by New York City FC ahead of the 2026 season out of Dix Hills on Long Island, ends his first regular season at Next Pro level as NYCFC II's leading attacker, having scored nine goals and added three assists.

NYCFC II finished the 2026 season in sixth place, with 47 points collected from its 28 matches. It's the best regular-season finish in franchise history, which you can judge best on a points per game basis, since the number of competing teams and playoff spots in Next Pro changed since 2022, when the IIs finished in fifth place but only picked up 1.54 points per game. In 2024, the other time they qualified for the playoffs, they had 1.61 points per game and were in sixth place with 45 points, but now in 2026 their season ends with 1.68 points per game and 47 points.

All this means that the club is automatically advancing to the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, a single-elimination round with matches scheduled to be played the weekend of Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18.

Being in sixth in the East also means that NYCFC II is now awaiting the identity of its playoff opponent, to be decided by MLS Next Pro's novel Pick-Your-Opponent playoff mechanism in which the top three seeds in each conference get to select which team they'll host in the playoffs, with then the fourth place team in each conference hosting whichever team from 5th-8th that wasn't selected by any of the top three.

For a while, as NYCFC II and Union 2 remained deadlocked before the shootout, the Decision Day live table had NYCFC II sitting in eighth place, a finish which would have subjected the Pigeons to the first-ever Play-in Round.

The Play-in Round is a mimic of what big-boy MLS does with its Wild Card round that has the No 8 and No 9 seeds of each conference play a win-or-go-home knockout match, hosted by the No 8 seed, to determine who advances to the best-of-three Round One of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Mercifully, there is no best-of-three round of playoffs at MLS Next Pro level, but the playoff field did still expand slightly this season.

Instead of having to deal with the 8v9 game, the shootout win guarantees that NYCFC II will travel to face one of the Eastern Conference's top four seeds — Crown Legacy FC, Chattanooga FC, Atlanta United FC 2, or Columbus Crew 2 — on the road after having over three weeks of rest between matches. This first-ever MLS Next Pro Play-in Round is scheduled to unfold between Friday, October 9 and Sunday, October 11, hence the extra time off for the teams that finished among the top-7 of each conference, who won't play again until the following weekend.

This qualification is big for NYCFC II, since the only other season the club has ever played postseason soccer since its 2022 debut was in 2024, which was also the year the IIs marched to the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and became the furthest-advancing Division III team in that year's tournament.

NYCFC II stormed its way into this playoff spot in part by closing out the season with a winning streak while playing what might be its final handful of home matches at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island. The Pigeons earned five consecutive, crucial regulation wins in their five matches played on Randall's Island to close out the 2026 home schedule, creating a fortress for their own under the expanse of the Triboro Bridge.

The good home form, plus this important result on Decision Day in Pennsylvania, got NYCFC II back to the playoffs, and they'll now try to earn the club's first-ever win in the playoffs. Back in 2024, they got knocked out of the Conference Quarterfinals by Philadelphia Union 2, with the Union earning a 1-0 win at Subaru Park on a goal scored by current Brooklyn FC player CJ Olney Jr.

Now Matt Pilkington, who has coached NYCFC II for every single season of its five in existence, will try to orchestrate a 2024 Open Cup-esque tournament run in what is already his best-ever year leading the soon-to-transform team known as NYCFC II.
